Bibliographic and Bibliophilic Interests of a Professor of History of Law, Jan Wincenty Bandtkie-Stężyński 1783–1846

The person and achievement of Jan Wincenty Bandtkie-Stężyński as a distinguished lawyer, professor of history of Polish law and the Dean of the Faculty of Law 1816–1831 at the University of Warsaw have been extensively discussed in the literature. The bibliographic and bibliophilic aspect of his biography, however, is less known. Under the influence of his older brother, Jerzy Samuel, a distinguished bibliographer and librarian, Jan Wincenty Bandtkie-Stężyński, became initially interested in mainly legal writing. He also participated in compiling a dictionary commissioned by Jan Bogumił Korn, a publisher from Wrocław. He was the author of numerous invaluable source publications, such as the monuments of the Polish law. He was the owner of one of the biggest private libraries of a historical and legal profile in the Kingdom of Poland.
