The novella Cat and Mouse 1961 by Günter Grass belongs to the „Danzig Trilogy“, named so not only because Danzig is the setting of the story, but also because this city has gained a symbolic meaning in Grass’ work. Danzig stands for a specific region Weichsel area, but also for a specific period of time before and during the World War II and certain circumstances geographical, political und social, which altogether render the story of Joachim Mahlke the significance of a representative one. In this paper there have been presented the various influences which have affected the life of this young man and his „Danzig socialisation“.
