WOMAN’S HONOUR. ON FILM ADAPTATIONS OF LA PRINCESSE DE CLÈVES BY MARIA DE LA FAYETTE

Maria de La Fayette’s novel La Princesse de Clèves was adapted three times for a film – two of them are adaptations set contemporary, and one is a costume, historical movie set in an original plot’s time 16th century. The paper analyses and compares these adaptations, including their relation with literary prototype. Although the book is included in French school required reading list, yet it is not known generally. Jean Dellanoy’s adaptation 1961 is a historical, costume and pretentious spectacle set in the 16th century. Dellanoy concentrated on spectatular scenes, especially cotilldance scene showing coup de foudre. Two modern film adaptations – Andrzej Żuławski’s La fidelité Wierność and Manoel de Oliveira’s La lettre List were made in 1999; however, they are absolutely different in terms of the main characters and film’s background.
