TRAGEDY IN THE MAIN STREET. LA SEŃORITA DE TRAVÉLEZ BY CARLOS ARNICHES AFTER JUAN ANTONIO BARDEM

This article presents an immense role of Carlos Arniches in Spanish cinema. The work of this playwright is a subject of more than fourty film adaptations. This fact changed him in the most adaptated Spanish artist, which underlines the popularity and potential of his theater. There are many reasons why Arniches became the source of inspiration for filmmakers. Apart from commercial reasons or limited possibilities of inexperienced art of film, the author also highlights the pursuit of realism and national identity, that constitute the key points of Arniches’ work. The author decided to focus our article on Calle Mayor Main Street, directed by Juan Antonio Bardem and based on the best work of the playwright, La seńorita de Trevélez. The film is a free reading of the original text, that serves merely as a starting point for the screenplay. Our critical overview of the film allow us to establish the main differences between these two versions and explain reasons for them. By observing the protagonists, the places and the meaning of the Bardem´s work we intend to detect how Bardem refer to theatrical and cinematic tradition and transforms it according to his ideology and vision of the cinema. Thus, the ‘regenerationist’ and customary note of the play becomes in the movie critical realism and social testimony. Therefore, the tragicomedy is being reduced to the tragedy; and the society becomes a protagonist while the grotesque turns up to be replaced by the criticism.
