Abstrakt

The author attempts to analyze the philosophical problem of human enhancement in the light of its relation to the development in of medical and technical sciences. Such approach entails taking into account two different questions. The first refers to the issue of how to define enhancement, and the possibility of linking particular examples of enhancement to general, objective criteria which would justify the notion of enhancement per se. The second relates to the category of normal functioning, which, as a result of some recent technological developments, has now become more problematic. As a conclusion the author emphasizes that any criteria of enhancement will necessarily depend not only on objective measures of the quality of life or a biographical impact on a given subject, but, in the first place, on a moral question about the model of good life agreed upon by society.
