Relationships of art theory and philosophy in Erwin Panofsky’s concept

The dissertation is focused on the philosophical sources of Erwin Panofsky’s art theory. When determining the subject of art history as well as its method, Panofsky was strongly influenced by Kantianism and Neo-Kantianism. The principles of his system are connected by the epistemological inspiration and Kant’s thought. Whereas in terms of introduced notions and the manner of expressing the main issues, Panofsky was influenced by Cassirer’s philosophy of symbolic forms. The dissertation deals with such notions as “style”, “perspectives”, “basic notions”, “will to form”, symbol and symbolic form.
