The virtues of intellect as a manifestation of the internal culture of a human person in the context of Thomas Aquinas’s thought

Intellectual virtues express the intellectual nature of man as a person. Nature sets the proper type of potency — powers, which allow for an easy realization of activities, as well as for the teleological orientation of nature. Virtues are the way by which we know and understand human nature — they not as much constitute it, but rather show what it is. The understanding of certain intellectual virtues understanding, wisdom, science, art and prudence allows one to ascertain that they fully express the human intellectual culture, while not opposing nature. Since, however intellectual virtues demand good use, it is necessary for a man to possess some virtues of will. Therefore, one should not reject this approach because of its intellectual feature. The fundamental, at this point, role of prudence, which will not be treated instrumentally while it remains only one of the intellectual virtues which are realized in the will, suffciently shows the dependence of the will on the intellect, and also shows that the virtues of will complement the intellectual virtues.
