The paper provides an overview and assessment of the place and importance of Russian literary awards (state and non-state) from the 19th century to the present day. The author’s attention is focused on pointing to different functions performed by the most important awards in the Soviet period (Lenin’s, Stalin’s and State Awards), as well as after the turn of 1991 (Russian Booker Award, Antybooker, Triumph). While in the times of the USSR, the awards were awarded (without the participation of readers) almost exclusively to creators who served the authorities and were faithful to the party ideology, ensuring their popularity and high spending, after the collapse of the Soviet empire – under different socio-political and economic conditions – their dimensions changed completely. Non-state awards have gained in importance, as their multiplicity and ephemerality cause the blurring of the literary hierarchy and the decline of the literary process.
