In the first part of the paper the author presents the history of various institutions — university faculties, departments and institutes — arranged diachronically in three stages (1945–1974, 1975–1989, 1990–2015). She takes into account the circumstances of their establishment (including the legal framework), their organisers, staff, organisational structures and their changes. In addition, she points to other components of academic life influencing the work of academic library science centres, such as conferences and journals. In the second part, devoted to a discussion of bibliological and information-science research conducted at Polish universities, the author focuses on various issues, treating chronology only as an element organising descriptions of research processes at individual library studies centres. She identifies the areas of research, as well as changes in the thematic foci in the analysed period, citing selected scholars and their most important works. Like in part one, she also discusses the social, political and cultural determinants stimulating research processes, paying particular attention to the impact of new technologies and media. The author’s overview confirms the huge role the academic institutions engaged in library studies play in the consolidation of the position of bibliology as an academic discipline, but at the same time, she shows how the research profile of book studies has been changing in recent years, including issues associated with information science and new technologies.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Jadwiga Konieczna Prawa autorskie (c) 2024 Jadwiga Konieczna https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-03-18 2024-03-18 67 131 161 10.19195/0080-3626.67.8 Book studies in Poland between 1945 and 2015: The sources of theoretical inspiration https://wuwr.pl/rbibl/article/view/15240 <div class="page" title="Page 1"> <div class="section"> <div class="layoutArea"> <div class="column"> <div class="page" title="Page 30"> <div class="section"> <div class="layoutArea"> <div class="column"> <p>The aim of the paper is to picture a retrospective panorama of the theoretical legacy of post-war Polish book studies. Of key importance to the author is the question of the object of the discipline and, consequently, its scope. The author discusses directions in book studies and the bibliological process making up — starting in the 1930s and with Jan Muszkowski’s concept — the core tradition and foundation of book-studies theories: the theories built around the paradigm of ‘life of the book,’ looking at it as an integrally defined process of production, dissemination and consumption; Karol Glombiowski’s functional theory, thanks to which ‘systemic’ and ‘functional’ approaches became a commonly accepted methodological premise in book studies; the concepts formulated by Janusz Dunin, who linked the bibliological tradition of historical source studies of editorial forms of books to the functional theory and to ‘communication’ perspective; the theory formulated by Radoslaw Cybulski, who, in combining the established morphology of the book with a semiotic and communication perspective, adopted ‘book consumption,’ that is, an ‘integrated system of satisfying the needs of book users,’ as a functional category to describe the behaviour of participants in the book market; the concepts focused on the ‘social communication situation’ as a research concept and perspective stemming from the sociological and semiotic reorientation of humanistic thinking. At the end, the author discusses the trends which have considerably expanded research perspectives in recent years: books in the media space; the ‘culture of the book’ paradigm, which is conducive to an ‘anthropologisation’ of the bibliological process, perceived no longer only institutionally, from the perspective of social communication, but also through relations, interactions and value judgements of people participating in it, which shifts research priorities towards the questions of reading and often also towards ‘regional’ approaches; and the theory of book art and research into book aesthetics. At the various stages of the development of bibliology and in relation to respective research approaches, the focus shifted from the book as a cultural artefact and its ‘life,’ that is, the bibliological process with its institutions, to the functions of the book with regard to the public in the process of social and cultural transmission, and, finally, to the public as the creator and user of the culture of the book, whose actions are ‘recorded’ in bibliological documentation.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Irena Socha Prawa autorskie (c) 2024 Irena Socha https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-03-18 2024-03-18 67 163 192 10.19195/0080-3626.67.9 Research on the history of libraries and librarianship in Poland: A survey, 1945–2015 https://wuwr.pl/rbibl/article/view/15165 <div class="page" title="Page 24"> <div class="section"> <div class="layoutArea"> <div class="column"> <p>The author of the article discusses selected academic and popular publications on the history of libraries and librarianship in Poland which were issued between 1945 and 2015. In that period, information about the most important historical resources of various Polish libraries and early book collections was made available. In addition, the period was marked by progress in the study of materials originating before the end of the 18th century. Scholars published a range of methodological works and works about sources, contributing to the development of scholarship. At the same time, there were too few editions of source materials.</p> <div class="page" title="Page 25"> <div class="section"> <div class="layoutArea"> <div class="column"> <p>After 1989, scholars intensified their efforts to find sources in foreign collections, especially in Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia and Germany. Polish collections kept abroad are yet to be fully researched and to have their inventories and catalogues published.</p> <p>The vast body of literature is uneven when it comes to its focus on individual historical periods, regions, subregions and local centres. It comprises publications on the history of libraries, their function and role in culture with regard to the history of publications focused on the types of libraries or individual libraries — of different traditions, sizes and the book, and stature. Scholars also explored the history of private book collections, reading rooms and libraries, as well as biographies of librarians and collectors. The quality of the publications varies. There are gaps in, for example, the history of libraries in the former Polish eastern borderlands and ‘blank pages’ in the historiography of Polish librarianship after the Second World War. There is a visible shortage of quantification of phenomena from the past of libraries, despite the fact that there are some possibilities in this respect. What is also needed is development in comparative studies, including from an international perspective, although this would require Polish historians to become more interested than before in the history of librarianship in other countries.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Jacek Puchalski Prawa autorskie (c) 2024 Jacek Puchalski https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-03-18 2024-03-18 67 193 217 10.19195/0080-3626.67.10 Polish research on publishing in Poland between 1945 and 2015: Themes, legacy and implications for further research https://wuwr.pl/rbibl/article/view/15169 <p>The history of publishing in Poland encompasses many issues associated with the emergence and dissemination of printed books. Of fundamental significance to the study of these issues are the records of the publishing output: while we have nearly complete, though still underexamined, records of this output for the period from the 15th to the 18th century, documented in bibliographies and catalogues, the situation is worse when it comes to the 19th and 20th centuries, until the outbreak of the Second World War. In this respect, what we need is not only a continuation, but a radical intensification of bibliographic work. This concerns works published in the Latin, Cyrillic, Hebrew and Greek scripts, as well as musical notation. Polish book scholars have devoted a lot of attention to the beginnings of printing in Poland. The historiography concerning various typographic workshops located in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is rich; however, it still requires further extensive studies. Scholars have also been interested in phenomena influ- encing the content structure of printed publications, such as publishing privileges (in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth), censorship and restrictions imposed by the partitioning powers and later by Poland’s communist authorities, as a result of which Polish publications had to be printed abroad and an independent publishing movement emerged. The scholars’ research interests have also focused on books as products of printers and publishers and on the publication of written works. Scholars have examined both the various components of the book (title page, printer’s signet, stemmata, etc.) and its editorial composition as a whole. Their undoubted achievements in the studies of the history of publishing in Poland are significant, yet in many areas they need to be continued and expanded (one important task is the edition of sources for the study of the history of Polish publishing) and to investigate the phenomena that stem from developmental tendencies in modern book studies.</p> Maria Juda Prawa autorskie (c) 2024 Maria Juda https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-03-18 2024-03-18 67 219 238 10.19195/0080-3626.67.11 Book studies in Poland after the Second World War https://wuwr.pl/rbibl/article/view/15173 <div class="page" title="Page 1"> <div class="section"> <div class="layoutArea"> <div class="column"> <p>The paper presents an overview of research on books and their types conducted after the Second World War by Polish bibliologists. The scholars were mostly interested in academic books, popular books, as well as books for children and young adults. They explored their characteristic features, presented them as elements of the publishing repertoire and of serial publications, and discussed their development in various periods. Less interesting to them were the structure and typology of books. In recent years, studies devoted to electronic books as objects of bibliological research have begun to appear. Research on books and their types is also conducted by scholars from other disciplines: historians, historians of literature and historians of education. Their findings are also of interest to bibliologists.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> Anna Gruca Prawa autorskie (c) 2024 Anna Gruca https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-03-18 2024-03-18 67 239 255 10.19195/0080-3626.67.12 Post-war Polish scholarship on the history and theory of library science https://wuwr.pl/rbibl/article/view/15243 <div class="page" title="Page 1"> <div class="section"> <div class="layoutArea"> <div class="column"> <p>The author of the paper explores the development of the concept of Polish post-war library science as an academic discipline and demonstrates the wealth of achievement in librarianship studies.
