This paper deals with the educational discourse used in French and Polish history textbooks addressed to adolescents and published in a so-called modern-day model of textbooks. The study falls under the continuity of the French discourse analysis in a contrastive dimension, the object of which is the description of different “discursive cultures” based on their verbal productions. The hypothesis developed in this study is that French and Polish textbooks diff er in their representation of causality and agentivity, which contributes, through discourse infl ections, to the construction of two different memories of the course of events. The two concepts mentioned are, indeed, organizing principles of the educational discourse analysed, since indicating explanatory causes and links between phenomena, anticipating and providing an understanding of consequences are an integral part of the educational activity supported by the popularization discourse we analyse. Our analysis is based on the principles of discourse semantics in a comparative perspective.

This paper identifies strategies for the construction of discourse on the Second World War in two history textbooks published in the framework of two European projects. The main objective is to observe how different stratagems such as the semiotic device, lexical expressions, syntactic constructions, participate in the construction of a coherent narrative that shapes the collective memory on the discursive object of the Second World War. The dialogical character of the history textbook and its pedagogical aim, the essential and constitutive elements of the discursive strategy towards the readership conveying soft historical skills, are also questioned in the present paper.

The main aim of this article is to highlight discrepancies and similarities in the structuring and use of the French expressive conversational formula faut pas pousser and its Polish equivalent bez przesady. The use of a descriptive model based on a set of relevant formal, pragmatic-semantic, discourse, affective and socio-cultural parameters made it possible to show in which speech acts, depending on the respective contexts, the formulae being compared are involved.

Entre la linguistique et le social : comparaison des principes théoriques et méthodologiques de l’ethnolinguistique de Lublin et de la sémantique discursive

This paper focuses on the theorical and methodological principles of two linguistic trends interested in the conceptualisation of reality in language or in discourse: the ethnolinguistic school of Lublin and discursive semantics. The similarities and differences between the two approaches described in the article concern their goals, research concepts, data corpus and analysis results. The paper ends up with a conclusion on the possibility of integrating ethnolinguistic and semanticdiscursive research within a multidisciplinary project.

L’approche diachronique en analyse du discours contrastive

Starting from the observation that diachronic approaches are rare in discourse analysis and that synchronicity poses the problem of neglecting both the historicity of discourse production and inter-discourse, the author presents a methodological reflection on what distinguishes “geographical” and diachronic approaches in Contrastive Discourse Analysis. This reflection is illustrated by some of the results of a contrastive analysis of the treatment of National Socialism and the World War II in German history textbooks between 1955 and 2016.

Catégorisation conceptuelle des noms de pain en Pologne et stratégies appliquées à leur traduction en français

The aim of this article is threefold. Firstly, we will develop conceptual categories for the different types of bread offered by a “star” bakery in Poland known for its wide range of breads. We propose the analysis of bread names composed of the word bread (N) and nouns (N) or adjectives derived from nouns (ADJ) that designate e.g. intrinsic properties ([basic] ingredients, shape or appearance), location (spatial-geographical criteria), Polish culture (cultural criteria), history (historical criteria: historical figures or events), and others. Secondly, we will analyse existing Polish-French translations of bread names we found on the website of an international Polish bakery, which could be categorised in the same conceptual categories and subcategories which were defined in the first stage of our research. The analysis of translations will be based on the taxonomy of translation strategies developed by Diederik Gritt (1997) and Andrew Chesterman (2000). The third objective is to assess the relevance and applicability of machine translation, more precisely by
the application Chrome, for bread names belonging to certain (sub)categories by comparing them with existing translations.

De la figure géométrique à la figure rhétorique : le cercle comme métaphore narrative et temporelle dans les romans de Claude Simon

One of the most important authors of the [French] New Novel, Claude Simon, perceives scriptural work as being in correlation with mathematical concepts, such as symmetry and geometrics, which manifest themselves both structurally and thematically. The motif of the circle provides the best representation of repetition, which is reflected in the diegetic composition of the novel — looped or spiraled — as well as in the non-linear conception of time, forming a Möbius strip. Thanks to such plasticity of geometric and textual matter, Simon circumvents the ontological problematic of fi nitude, inherent in the existence of beings and the duration of things.

How can we study the making of a poet-translator’s identity, of one who was born in a colony and decided to settle in Metropolitan France, especially when his ethnic and social backgrounds set him apart? Individual or literary identity is built on a person’s relation to others, as established by Paul Ricoeur’s and Édouard Glissant’s works. This is how Lacaussade tried to approach the matter; while being a budding poet, he turned to foreign, and in particular, anglophone poets. Beyond mere imitation, translation facilitates creative writing, so being acknowledged as a creator in his own right helped him.

Comment étudier les titres des oeuvres retraduites ? Remarques préliminaires

This study addresses the issue of titles of retranslated works, seldom discussed in studies on retranslation. A corpus of titles of novels retranslated into French, Greek and Polish was subjected to a quantitative and qualitative analysis: firstly, to answer questions about the frequency of “re-titling” according to the language of translation, the number of successive translations of a work, the time of publication of the original work and of the translation(s); secondly, a comparative analysis of the successive titles of a work informs on the nature of the undergone changes. The study shows that “re-titling” is a phenomenon present in all three languages, but it has a random nature: it would be difficult to indicate a category of novels, a period or a type of title in which this practice would be more regular. Similarly, the ways of “re-titling” are common to all three languages, but their use is not systematic nor conditioned by specific factors. Apart from these findings, the article points to possible directions for research on retranslated titles from a translational and socioliterary perspective.

Les études italiennes en Pologne à la lumière d’une analyse bibliométrique des publications des années 2000 à 2020

The paper off ers an analysis of the complete body of research writings produced between 2000 and 2020 by all Polish Italian Studies scholars currently affiliated with university faculties and departments of the two major disciplines of modern philology: linguistics and literary studies. The argument is based on the bibliometric data compiled as part of the research project “Bibliography of Italian Studies in Poland: Digital Repository, Text Digitization, Bibliometrics,” under which 2716 publications authored by 139 scholars from 19 Polish research institutions were analysed. The statistics presented in the paper cover the type of research publication, language, place of publication, the author’s affiliation relative to the place of publication and the number of authors. Our findings indicate that Polish Italian Studies scholars mainly choose to publish chapters in collected volumes (mostly conference proceedings), with their contributions being single-authored and written in Italian (meaning that their research is largely geared to an Italian-speaking readership, and collaborative research projects are very rare). Their research papers were as a rule published in Polish journals, often those published by university faculties, and the internationalisation of research (publishing in languages other than Polish) was only apparent. Slow changes in publishing practices have been observable in recent years as a consequence of the guidelines of the Ministry of Education and Science on the assessment of research performance and the promotion of publication in foreign journals and publishing houses.
