Theory, Books and Art
In this article Peter Sonderen examines how books, theory and art are connected in the western tradition of art. Wandering between Alberti’s De Pictura, Job Koelewijn’s Spinoza-works and artists’ libraries Donald Judd, he makes clear that the writings of artists or the use of books in art installations can be clear indications of changes within the relation between art and theory. In the second part the author dives into the meaning of the notion of theory and shows how artists used self wrought theories and how important they still are for the development of our actual notion of art.
