Under a law passed in Prussia in 1868, municipalities were allowed to impose an obligation to slaughter all slaughter animals in a municipal slaughterhouse. Wroclaw did not make use of this option at the time, despite the fact that the municipal slaughterhouse operating at the time, located within the Old Town, was an outdated, primitive facility unable to cope with the task of taking over all the slaughtering for the needs of the inhabitants of Wroclaw. Finally, the decision to build a modern facility: a slaughterhouse combined with a slaughter animal market, was taken in 1877. The biggest challenge proved to be finding a suitable plot of land for this purpose, which took the city authorities as long as 14 years. This text presents the struggle with this matter, with particular emphasis on the urban planning aspects – the formation of the industrial topography of Wroclaw in the 19th century.
