The article discusses the history of contemporary critical and artistic reception of one of the most famous Polish battle paintings – Battle of Grunwald by Jan Matejko (1878). As it turns out, the work, created in the 19th century, is constantly present in the collective historical consciousness of Poles, which is reflected in successive interpretations discussed in the text, often transferred from the critics’ statements, including critics close to the feminist and anarchizing trends, to the art itself (Kamil Kuskowski, Edward Krasinski, Edward Dwurnik, The Krasnals and other groups).
