Abstrakt

The painter and graphic artist Konstanty Brandel (1880–1970) made only five graphic self-portraits in his almost 70 years of career: Self-portrait – a profile with a wreath and a beard (1916), Own portrait, a profile with a hand and a beard for fun (1917), Self-portrait without a beard (1920), Self-portrait, ¾ of own head (1926) and a hidden self-portrait Two heads (1908–1913). They performed various functions: the first of these works are carriers of phantasmatic imagery designed for the artist himself and the area of learning gravure printing, and the latter manifest the identity of the author-graphic artist. The review of images and the stages of work on them through the analysis of states and editions shows the development of the artist and his attitude towards the medium. The article analyses a fragment of Konstanty Brandel’s impressive graphic art output – which has not been comprehensively elaborated yet - providing new knowledge about the oeuvre of this author.
