“From fraternal help to fighting terrorism” – taboo transformations in the language of politics in the Polish postwar press

The article concerns the phenomena of tabooisation and detabooisation of the language of politics on the example of press descriptions of acts of aggression made by the USSR later Russia and the USA against other countries. The phenomena discussed are strictly connected with the foreign policy of Poland; pro-Soviet and anti-American orientation was compulsory in the period of socialism. However, after political transformations and censorship lifting this particular direction of evaluation changed. Taking it into consideration, acts of aggression of the Soviet Union e.g. against Czechoslovakia in 1968 were called fraternal help, justified with an internationalistic duty, and almost 30 years later – Soviet invasion e.g. against Afghanistan in 1994. Similarly, the United States carried on policy of the war edge e.g. war in Vietnam and later they fought against the so-called terrorism e.g. against Afghanistan in 2002.
