Ancient meanings of words do not vanish into the blue…
The fundamental purpose of this article was to present fates of semantic words, which old meanings can be actually found in phraseology. Exemplificative material constituted lexemes that currently do not appear in Polish, but functions in specialist inflections, e.g. ambit, pozłota, nawa, świątek, utrzeć — ucierać. Reference to the past showed that such words can be referred to as “historically burdened”. Their archaic meanings were kept in phrases like: wziąć, brać coś na ambit; głowa do pozłoty; nawa państwowa; świątek i piątek, piątek i świątek; Jaki piątek, taki świątek; Zielone Świątki; utarta droga, utarty szlak, tor; iść, kroczyć utartą drogą; coś toczy się utartym torem.
