Abstract

Communication aspects of certain speech genres used in texts of deaf persons

This article presents communication problems of deaf persons using written texts in official situations in the aspect of genre model. The article stresses many interferences of the Polish Sign Language PSL in the text of the applications written by deaf persons in Polish language. The author discusses three groups of application texts classified by the type of genre implementation and the level of text understanding. Group 1 — applications meeting most or all of genre characteristics; communicative texts. Group 2 — texts without formal genre characteristics but comprising functional aspects of the genre; incomplete communicative texts. Group 3 — texts not meeting genre characteristics; examples of unsuccessful communication. The research leads the author to a conclusion that a communication competency differently formed in the deaf community results in application characteristics unawareness. Additionally, the application has a limited pragmatic value for PSL users. Low genre characteristics awareness is reflected in composition, cognitive and stylistic aspects. Intention is the only aspect remaining request being a goal of an application. Some examples could not be interpreted as a text absence of sentences structure, cohesion, coherence and pragmatic consistency; combination of semiotic systems.
