Abstrakt

Reconstruction of families on the basis of birth, marriages and death registers by means of the Microsoft Access software. A practical introduction

The article seeks to present a practical introduction to the reconstruction of families on the basis of birth, marriages and death registers by means of the Microsoft Access software.
The author uses the descriptions and some applications of the popular software as well as documents of natural movements of people in a selected parish in Upper Silesia.
He describes the creation and initial processing of a database containing information about births, marriages and deaths. The article also presents a two-part algorithm describing the various steps to be taken to combine the relevant pieces of information from the database in order to obtain a reconstructed set of families. The algorithm can be extended and used for other types of social research as well.
The reconstruction does not require a knowledge of programming languages. An embedded system of application queries is sufficient. This is why the computer technique described in the article can be universally applied.
