Volume 61.1 of Anglica Wratislaviensia, edited by Michał Szawerna, is a collection of five original research articles in the area of multimodal analysis. Hiroki Hanamoto’s article investigates gesture use among learners of English as a second language with varying language proficiency levels. Ilhana Nowak’s article explores the conceptual metaphors guiding the interpretation of 25 monuments erected in the former Yugoslavia from the 1960s to the 1980s. Kimberley Pager-McClymont’s article characterizes a master conceptual metaphor projecting emotions from an animated entity onto the surroundings and discusses the metaphor’s exemplifications in multimodal texts of popular culture. Michał Szawerna and Paweł Zygmunt’s article is a case study of the metaphorical indicators of the major themes of Denis Villeneuve’s film Dune: Part One. Last but not least, Julia Wolbergs and Björn Kasper’s article elaborates on the epistemological interest of cultural studies for German as a foreign and second language, points out the limitations of the current focus on certain modes, and broadens this focus by highlighting the connectivity of the epistemological interest to multimodal research using two relevant case studies.
