Specialised encyclopaedias and subject dictionaries in the work of a book arts scholar

For a book arts scholar specialised encyclopaedias and subject dictionaries are the source of information about artistic books, including both manuscripts and printed books. Such resources contain entries related to decorative art illumination, illustration, book binding, etc. and book collecting private collections, libraries, book museums in various countries and periods. Some encyclopaedias also provide biographic data about people involved in the making of books — authors, artists, but also book lovers. Other references include information on bibliophile societies and magazines. Many of them are lavishly illustrated. The article presents several specialised encyclopaedias and subject dictionaries, both Polish and foreign, in the field of bibliology and art history. The author describes the structures of the publications, the types of entries with indexes and lists of references they contain. She also points to entries related to book aesthetics and notes which publications contain a separate entry for “book arts”.
