EURIDICE project – On-line access to unique regional collections of Książnica Kopernikańska in Toruń

The EURIDICE project European Recommended Materials for Distance Learning Courses for Educators, supported by European Commission’s e-TEN programme, is addressed to educational institutions and individual users. It provides wide access to unique sources from various providers, sources that include archives, libraries, museums and photographic repositories. These materials will be made available via a multilingual search engine. There are ten project partners from seven EU member states: Poland, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Austria and Greece. Wojewódzka Biblioteka Publiczna – Książnica Kopernikańska [Regional Public Library – Copernicus Library] in Toruń, a partner in this Consortium, has added to the EURIDICE service a collection of 2500 paintings with a database containing descriptions of various items. The Copernicus Library has made available reproductions of title pages of books printed in the 16th and 17th centuries by printing houses in Gdańsk, Toruń and Elbląg; materials on the history of Chełm law and the library’s iconographic collections depicting the history of the Toruń architecture from the Middle Ages to the modern times. The database includes 2500 descriptions in the Dublin Core format used for archive materials. The Copernicus Library has sent two of its databases – one with scans of pictures and one with descriptions of documents – to the Alinari company in Florence, which has merged the Toruń databases and passed them to universities participating in the project. The universities are to carry out tests and evaluate the EURIDICE service.
