Abstrakt

Postmodernist Bibliological Reflections. Significance of Jacques Derrida’s Work for the Research of the Book

The article presents Jacques Derrida’s views on inadequacy of the message conveyed by the book to the requirements of the present. Derrida’s statements on the book were compared with corresponding statements from bibliology theoreticians. The article quotes fragments of Neil Postman’s works indicating unique character of the book as a medium activating human mental and intellectual skills. Such specific aspects of book culture as linearity and historicity, constituting an element of Derrida’s reflection, are analysed. In conclusion the article attempts an analysis of the significance of constitutive features of a traditional book for post-modernist societies in a different manner than that presented by Derrida in his works.
