Book Culture in the post-war Wałbrzych 1945–1989. Condition, Needs and Potential for Research

The history of books in the post-war Wałbrzych has so far occupied little space in the librarian science literature. The issue seems considerably neglected, considering the impressive achievement of the research of book culture in Lower Silesia. This article constitutes the first attempt to draw attention to the need to supplement this gap in regional bibliology. The review of the research limited to a closed period in Polish publishing and printing 1945–1989 reveals a surprisingly small number of studies concerning the book culture and a bewildering richness of unused and unedited bibliological sources. The article presents needs of and potential for the research of book culture in Wałbrzych as well as emphasises the necessity of collecting, ordering, analysing and evaluating basic data, facts and regularities in the development of the book in the important and interesting period of forty years in the town of great economic and political significance at the time.
