Some Remarks and Corrections Concerning the Life of Stanisław Ostoja-Chrostowski 1900–1947

The life of Stanisław Ostoja-Chrostowski 1900–1947, a distinguished wood-engraver, illustrator and pedagogue, shows how the political situation in which he lived and worked continued to affect his official biography for years after his death. His involvement in underground conspiracy work resulted in the distortion of his biography, e.g. concerning the dates in his life and the information about his alleged studies in Moscow, while he was actually at that time in prison. As a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw he was a co-founder of numerous art societies, a juror in graphic art competitions and a winner of many awards for his works exhibited in Poland and abroad. He was a full-time professor in the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and its rector. Intensive wood-engraving work caused an injury to his right hand, which was even threatened with amputation. Lung cancer caused his death in 1947, which saved him from a severe prison sentence for his conspiracy activities. After his death, until the 1980s, when the truth about dramatic moments of his life was revealed, no mention was made about his conspiracy work.
