“Rozkminianie” of argots
The article presents an analysis of how criminal vocabulary enters other language varieties. It also discusses the relation between the spread of criminal sociolect and cultural and language taboos. Criminal vocabulary functions in colloquial language due to its tonal attractiveness, large emotional charge and general social acceptance. The expansion of slang vocabulary may also be due to the process of breaking two types of language taboo – deciphering of argots and reducing the area of linguistic inappropriateness.
