Intertextuality — author — reader. On intention in intertextual relations

Intertextuality as a way to read literature focuses on a search for and interpretation of references to other works contained within a text. A key role in it is played by the author and the reader, the scope of whose competence changes — depending on the research methodology adopted. Structuralism emphasised intentional intertextual relations, in which the author made the decisions concerning the meaning of a literary work. It was the other way round in poststructuralism — non-intentional relations depended solely on the reader and his or her interpretation.
