Four of the texts included in this issue of “Quart” offer a variety of approaches to interpreting representational works of art. Mikołaj Getka-Kenig reconstructs the intended location and the significance of the representative image of Alexander I as the “resurrector” of Poland. Regarding Sarah Charlesworth, a member of the American group known as the Pictures Generation, the question of how one of her works might be perceived in the context of redefining the concept of artistic medium finds itself at the heart of Filip Pręgowski’s analyses. Aleksandra Czarny explores the output of Milica Tomić, who uses her art to translate the experience of the tragic Balkan conflict from the 1990s into a deconstruction of the concept of the nation and all forms of nationalism. Karolina Tomczak focuses on Anna Szpakowska-Kujawska’s series created during the pandemic, observing that the artist depicted both present-day observations and memories evoked by the new situation. Finally, we present Agnieszka Patała’s account of a conference held in Riga.
