Abstract

In this article, I look at the function of interactive documentary projects in the Netflix platform offer. I begin the argument by analysing the importance of interactivity in linear and non-linear television, with a focus on streaming platforms. The second part is devoted to the role played by documentaries on Netflix. The knowledge thus gathered allows me in the third part of the article to describe the interactive documentaries belonging the giant’s proposal. In the text, I look at interactivity and documentaries together, as these are elements of the media offering – one at a technological level, the other at a genre level – that are particularly attractive but also troublesome for the Netflix platform. The cases of reaching out to interactive documentary filmmaking per se seem particularly interesting research-wise because of the double challenge that the platform faces thanks to them. In the text, I draw on historical framing, analysis of found data and cognitive textual analysis.
