Résumé

COLLOQUIALISMS AND VULGARITIES AS A TRANSLATION PROBLEM: HALINA KRALOWA’S TRANSLATION OF NOVECENTO BY ALESSANDRO BARICCO

The article deals with the problem of translations of colloquialisms and vulgarities in a literary work, on the example of Halina Kralowa’s translation of Novecento by Alessandro Baricco. The author points to the difficulties in the choice of equivalent words and expressions in terms of context they were placed in, the intensity of expression and style, while taking into consideration also the cultural factors which determine the permissible limits of vulgarity in the target language, in respect to both spoken word and a literary work. Apart from that, the article presents several examples of the Italian colloquial style typical of the spoken language – based on the change of the word order in a sentence or the pleonastic use of pronominal particle ci – which prove that the style is not always possible to translate.
