Quedar: between the change and permanence

The aim of this study is to analyze the polysemous spanish verb quedar from the perspective of Cognitive Grammar. This work is mainly based on the theoretical tools of profile/base Langacker and Force Dynamics Talmy. A unified vision of the different uses of the verb predicative, copulative and auxiliary and of its different senses existence, location, possession and state is proposed. All together, our results show that the relationships between the different senses and those between the different grammatical constructions, even if they seem opposite, are not arbitrary, but rather motivated and systematic.
