Abstract

How do we speak about speaking? A language model of verbal communication

The aim of this article is to try to answer the question how an average language user imagines communication in this language, or more precisely how this popular verbal communication model may be reconstructed on the basis of various language data thus we mean a language image of communicating and speaking. In this reconstructed model communication is based on passing language messages conceptualized as things “conduit metaphor”. Speaking in turn is treated as a kind of communication; however, the way in which the whole act is organised remains different a sender and a text generated by him / her is the most important. While describing speaking-oriented behaviour we embrace a receiver-based perspective and pay attention to connections between speaking, thinking and emotions as well as to a phonetic aspect of speaking. This popular image of communication differs fundamentally from understanding of communication in contemporary linguistics.
