The implementation of the premises of Maeterlinck’s static drama in Young Poland drama

Maurice Maeterlinck’s idea of static drama was one of the most original literary concepts of the symbolism period. The author added static features to his plays by using various measures influencing the audience on many levels. The static nature of many works from the Young Poland period was achieved through many of these measures, e.g. limiting the dramatic action, constantly emphasising the protagonists’ waiting, the invariability of the place of action, and the sketch-like construction of the protagonists. Authors resorting to these measures included the greatest literary figures of the Young Poland period Stanisław Wyspiański, Stanisław Przybyszewski, Leopold Staff. The article presents the ways static elements were used in Young Poland drama, using selected examples.
