A misionary, consecrat or, smugler , herald ...? The roles of the translat or of Polish literature in France

The article draws on bibliographical data concerning translation of Polish literature in France after 1945 and the results of a survey carried out among translators of Polish literature into French. The author presents the changes in the number of translators between 1945–2009 as well as their “collective portrait.” The data concerning, among others, the age, sex, place of birth, education, mother tongues, situation of the translators of Polish literature in the French publishing world, illustrate the internal diversity of the community of translators, and their attitude to the tasks and work of the translators of Polish literature, as well as their various roles changing over time.
