GASTRONOMY IN MOLIČRE’S SELECTED WORKS AND THEIR TRANSLATIONS BY TADEUSZ BOY-ŻELEŃSKI
The study analyses the translations of expressions related to gastronomy found in three of Moliere’s works. The author of the translations is Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński, often called the greatest Polish translator of French literature. The analysis reveals that on closer examination there are several translation errors that might have resulted from Żeleński’s unfamiliarity with the 17th century French cuisine and his fast pace of work. However, it should be pointed out that the errors do not diminish the humour in the analyzed works.
