SŁONIMSKI: A CRITIC OR THEORETICIAN? ANTONI SŁONIMSKI, ROMANS Z X MUZĄ. TEKSTY FILMOWE Z LAT 1917–1976 [AN AFFAIR WITH THE TENTH MUSE. FILM WRITINGS FROM 1917–1976]

The book Romans z X Muzą is a collection of film reviews written by the well known poet and critic, Antoni Słonimski. In the opinion of Małgorzata and Marek Hendrykowski, who have made the selection of Słonimski’ s writings and discussed them in the extensive academic preface, he should be considered the first Polish film critic. In her article, Łucja Demby analyses various aspects of Słonimski’ s links with the cinema, stresses the perceptiveness of his judgements and points to the controversial nature of some of his ideas. The author brings attention to the fact that Słonimski was not only a critic but also a film theoretician.
