WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COFFEE WITH KARAN AND A COFFEE WITH ROSE — SPECIFICITY OF THE INDIAN TALK-SHOW AND THE PROBLEM OF TABOO BREAKING IN INDIAN TELEVISION

The article focuses on the analysis of two Indian talk-shows putting emphasis on differences between them and a model established by western media American and European ones. It also shows a role that this kind of TV productions play in breaking sexual and cultural taboo in India. The analysis is based on two talk-shows: Koffee with Karan and Yours Rose. Both those shows differ from one another in the fundamental way and they both are great examples of India-based talks with TV viewers. Karan’s show is a kind of familiar tube based on compère’s preferences while the show by Ramesh Venkatesan known as Rose is aimed at breaking cultural taboo related to social rank of hijras transsexuals in the Indian society. Both shows were very popular while being aired and both their hosts are now preparing for the new edition or creating a new kind of TV program. The structural analysis of both programs showed that the one hosted by Rose had far more important social impact, especially on real social life of third-sex people in the southern regions of India, i.e. state of Tamil Nadu, where Rose was born.
