On responsibility of philosophy. Some remarks in the margin of Göteborg speech of Ernst Cassirer

This text provides an introduction to the translation of Ernst Cassirer’s inaug-ural speech he gave in Göteborg in 1935. This speech is discussed, taking into account three different aspects. The philosophical dimension refers to the understanding of philosophy as a field responsible for the validity of humanistic values in European culture. The biographical aspect points to the particular importance of the published speech for Cassirer’s personal and professional life. The historical aspect focuses on the political context of the speech. On the occasion other figures of German culture are recalled, which approached the spiritual situation in Germany in the thirties in a similar way as Cassirer.
