The phenomenon of evil in philosophy of Jean-Luc Marion
The main goal of this article is to outline Jean-Luc Marion phenomenology of evil. Jean-Luc Marion texts concerning evil must be seen in the perspective of his phenomenology as radically non-metaphysical. In figures of “poor” and “saturated” phenomena and in the horizon of interpretation of Marion’s phenomenology of love. It is so because love and evil in form of suffering and responsibility both require radical individualization. Only I am responsible and only I love specific other.
In article I try to keep track of two threads. From one side I outline Marion’s figures of evil. From the other side, I try to order those phenomena according to „erotic reduction” introduced in Le phénomène érotique from 2003. Firstly I describe phenomenological reduction of evil — from its metaphysical concept to its donation as “deadly logic” and responsibility. Evil is in this perspective first and foremost suffering that calls for retribution. As vengeance, it is also a lie, that I myself am innocent. Subsequently, I elaborate the „erotic reduction” as the horizon of interpretation of evil. By asking about love of others evil is introduced firstly in the figures of hatred and bad faith. At the end evil is analyzed in forms of “will of nothing”, murder and suicide.
