The initiative for the creation of “Wrocławsko-Lwowskie Zeszyty Prawnicze” was born in Lviv as a result of joint scientific meetings of employees of the Faculty of Law, Administration and Economics of the University of Wrocław and the Faculty of Law of the Ivan Franko National University in Lviv. The beginnings of this cooperation date back to January 2007, when the dean's and rector's authorities declared the strengthening of contacts between academics and students of both universities. In June 2009, during the Ivan Franko University Days, an exhibition was opened at the Faculty of Law, Administration and Economics of the University of Warsaw, dedicated to the Lviv professors who formed the staff of Wrocław's legal sciences after World War II. During the opening of the exhibition, a publishing cooperation agreement was signed between the University of Wrocław and the Ivan Franko National University in Lviv, on the basis of which joint “Wrocławsko-Lwowskie Zeszyty Prawnicze” [Wrocław-Lviv Legal Studies] will be published. The editor-in-chief of the journal from the Polish side is Prof. Maciej Marszał, from the Ukrainian side – Prof. Andrij Bojko, and the Editorial Committee is composed of deans and rectors of both universities.

According to an agreement signed in June 2009 between the University of Wrocław and the Ivan Franko National University in Lviv, “Wrocławsko-Lwowskie Zeszyty Prawnicze” is a yearly journal published alternately in Wrocław and Lviv in Polish and Ukrainian. Since 2015, the journal's Editorial Team has given authors the opportunity to publish articles not only in Polish and Ukrainian, but also in conference languages (English, German, French, Russian) with appropriate abstracts as specified in the editorial requirements. Since 2016, Prof. Volodymyr Burdin has been appointed editor-in-chief of the Ukrainian Editorial Committee.

The editors are making efforts to ensure that Wrocław and Lviv legal sciences are known not only in Poland and Ukraine, but also in Europe and the world. This is to be achieved by publishing the journal in an open access format.
