Gaining knowledge as a key motive of FDI located abroad

There are many ways to gain foreign know-how. One of the most important channels of knowledge spillovers is foreign direct investment FDI. Usually inward FDI are linking with knowledge transfer, while outward FDI are rather treated as a potential channel of know-how transfer. But according to empirical research results, many companies gain a profit in the form of new knowledge from hosting country. Despite of these profits, gaining knowledge doesn’t need to be the most important motive for investing abroad. Results of empirical research aiming at defining a main motive of investment differ, especially when they concern European countries. However, part of empirical research confirms that in case of Japanese and American enterprises one of the investment reasons is the intention to gain knowledge as opposed to enterprises from other countries. Furthermore, regardless of the nationality of the investor, locating of research and development units is more often – then in other cases – targeted to gain technology knowledge.
