Abstract

Popcultural career of a character in a hoodie. Reconnaissance

Scally, who represents a new youth subcultural formation that emerged in Poland in the 90s of the 20th century, soon became an object of interest for authors of various forms of artistic expression. Scally is usually presented as a person of a low intellectual level, a specific appearance, a world view and a lifestyle, a lack of education and decorum that are often expressed in a vulgar behavior and language. The creations of the character are popular in fi lms e.g. Wożonko, TV series e.g. Świat według Kiepskich, songs e.g. Od wschodu do zachodu by Dezerter, Dres by Big Cyc, cabarets e.g. skits by Limo Cabaret, literature e.g. Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną by Dorota Masłowska, Dżozef by Jakub Małecki, Bóg nosi dres by Piotr Sender, comics e.g. Jeż Jerzy by Rafał Skarżycki and Tomasz Leśniak as well as in various forms of e-folklore mostly in jokes. To convey an accurate scally’s image, the character is primitivized on four basic areas: “curriculum vitae” scally’s origin, family status, education, employment, a lifestyle, an appearance and language of the figure. The character is being used to ridicule scally subculture, to diagnose the social situation in Poland after 1989, to exhibit social contrasts, to assess the condition of the young generation of Poles, to explore subcultural folklore and to destroy negative stereotypes.
