ROAD TO THE STARS — SCIENCE FICTION FILM OF THE SOVIET UNION IN THE SPACE AGE, BASED ON THE EXAMPLE OF PAVEL KLUSHANTSEV’S WORKS
This analysis concerns science fiction movies of Pavel Klushantsev, his only feature fi lm Planet of the Storms and Road to the Stars, Luna and Mars in which visions of the future — grounded in scientific facts — and educational film coexist. Klushantsev created a form of hybrid documentary blending science with fiction. For the visionary director ongoing space race between the USA and USSR was a chance to create on screen a future utopia heavily influenced by philosophical works of a pioneer of the astronautic theory Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. Today those films are a rare opportunity to see how the future was envisioned for audience in the Soviet Union. Opportunity which is vital for the history of culture of this era.
