A VERY LONG WALK. AMERICAN FILM A WALK IN THE CLOUDS 1995 AND ITS INDIAN REMAKE DHAAI AKSHAR PREM KE 2000 — A COMPARISON
The author compares the film A Walk in the Clouds 1995 directed by Alfonso Arau with its Indian remake Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke 2000 directed by Raj Kanwar, with a particular focus on how those two movies differ in portraying masculinity and femininity. Both films deal with a problem of pregnancy of a young, unmarried woman from a rich, traditional family. In the American film, a Mexican family is portrayed, in the Indian — an extended family of a wealthy factory owner from North India. Gąsior analyses similarities and differences between those two worlds, both oppressive for women and reluctant to change, but finally opening onto the new views of gender roles brought by an outsider helping the pregnant woman.
