Tradition and revolution. Joseph de Maistre’s conservatism

The scope of the paper is to examine the political philosophy of Joseph de Maistre. The article presents its “evolutionist” aspect. It manifested itself in the conception of tradition understood as a social practice, nonentirely conceptualised and relatively dynamic one. It is also regarded as the contextualisation of the project of the form of government and the programme of winning over for the “counter-evolution” of the ideological and political opponents. Willing to be faithful to the values, perceived as “natural”, Maistre evolutionism must lead to a doctrinal paradox. However, belonging to the tradition of Pascal’s “tragic worldview”, it reflects the situation of French conservatists of the 19th century.
