The impact of the 2022 war in Ukraine on the programming schedule of TVN24

Abstract

The article describes the changes in the programming schedule of the popular Polish news television TVN24 during the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. The author, a researcher of TV programs, starts with general considerations about television schedules and genres of TV journalism. He then characterized the regular schedule of the TV station in question in its weekly cycle, taking into account possible exceptions. On this basis, it was possible to prepare an analysis of changes in the schedule, starting from its almost complete disappearance in the first phase and concluding with the moment of complete restoration to its original shape. Not only did the content of the programs and their character (special editions) change, but their formal features were also deeply disturbed. The analysis made it possible to outline how the news media can function in a crisis situation caused by sudden, momentous and negative events.
