Translation techniques applied in rendering proper names in the German translation of the novel by J.R.R. TolkienThe Lord of the Rings
The paper deals with the rendering of English personal proper names in the German translation of the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien The Lord of the Rings. The analysis includes the use of translation techniques and the evaluation of the choice of equivalents based on the equivalence theory of W. Koller. In the empirically determined translation strategies a consistent method for the choice of equivalents can be recognized. The exact imitation of the form in both its structure and sound and the preservation of semantic equivalence are undisputed benefits of this successful transla-tional performance.
