Abstrakt

Law and language are intertwined with each other to such an extent that it is not possible to separate one from another. In order to master legal language and reach proficiency in translating legal texts, one should have a suitable knowledge of legal terms as well as be able to use them accurately. Legal language is characterized by great precision and — as a result — legal terms are often collocations.
The main purpose of this article is to draw attention to the significance of collocations in Dutch legal language and the frequency with which they appear in it. Firstly, the author discusses the theore-tical foundation of this issue, and then focuses on the outlined problems and presents the results of a preliminary analysis as well as a tentative classification of some of the Dutch collocations under scrutiny. This study may be seen as a starting point for further research.
