Guides to nineteenth-century craft and industry exhibitions

Nineteenth-century craft and industry exhibitions were accompanied by many publications, such as catalogues, brochures, reports, illustrated publications and albums, which served as guides that refl ected not only what was shown during the exhibitions, but also, to a certain extent, the character of nineteenth-century Europe — its drive toward progress and the way it understood the world. The guides differed in many respects: they had various purposes, were written from diverse perspectives, and presented information in various ways. The author presents examples of publications from a number of European exhibitions, including ones held in Leipzig in 1850, in Paris in 1867 and 1889, in Lemberg Lwów in 1894, and a press piece on an exhibition held in Vienna in 1873.
