An incomprehensible warming of relations? Clifford Geertz and natural sciences
The article discusses Clifford Geertz’s polemic with Charles Taylor. The American anthropologist revises in it his views on the relations between humanities and natural sciences. Referring to the achievements of contemporary physics Heisenberg’ principle of indeterminacy, Planck’s quantum theory, biology brain research, Jerome Bruner’s cultural psychology and sociology of science Bruno Latour’s actor-network theory, the author of The Interpretation of Cultures encourages calls for a warming of relations between them. I think that Geertz’s postulate to abandon the stratigraphic vision of reality, where biological, psychical, social and cultural aspects would represent separate layers, and attempts to consolidate the internal and the external resemble Latour’s efforts to re-unite all that is social.
