Abstract

This essay is an introduction to a special issue of Theoretical Practice devoted to environmental histories of capitalism. Using the example of the Haitian revolution and the parallel European struggles against the mechanization of labor, the author shows how different types of socio-ecological arrangements strengthened or weakened the position of subordinated classes.
